  • All time ‘Movie Week Leaderboard’ – Can you guess the best?
Graphic: A ballroom dancing couple with a film clapperboard

Can you guess which dance has seen the most Movie Week success to date? It’s Movie Week – so in anticipation of some fab dances this Saturday we’ve collected the highest scoring movie themed performances Strictly has seen into our own Movie dance leaderboard.

It includes dances from both Movie Night (Series 8 & 9, Week 10 Quarter-Finals) and Movie Week (Series 12 onwards, Week 3). Perhaps not surprisingly, the Movie Night dances from Series 8 and 9 do well here as they were performed for the Quarter-Finals in Week 10, much later in the competition than the current Week 3 Movie Week special.

This is based purely on scores – so some of your favourites may not have made the grade but hopefully there’ll be one or two classics in here you’ll enjoy seeing again. Let us know in the Comments below.

1. Pamela & James

  • Movie Night
  • Series 8 (2010) Week 10 QF
  • Viennese Waltz
  • Unchained Melody from ‘Ghost’
  • 4 Dec 2010
  • Score: 40

Pamela danced this on her 61st birthday and scored the first 10 of Series 8. An elegant, beautiful Viennese Waltz described by Craig as “full of emotion”. In fact the only 2 dances to receive 40 from the judges during this series were both danced by Pamela; her Quickstep also received full marks. Remains the only 40 awarded for a non-Final movie-themed dance to date.

2.  Chelsee & Pasha

  • Movie Night
  • Series 9 (2011) Week 10 QF
  • Jive
  • I’m a Believer from ‘Shrek’
  • 3 Dec 2011
  • Score: 39 (9,10,10,10)

Chelsee and Pasha had the highest scoring Jive of Series 9 with their brilliant Shrek routine, notable for Chelsee’s amazingly timed kicks and flicks as well as Pasha’s adorable Shrek ears. According to Bruno this Jive put Chelsee on the “fast-track to the semis”, and she finished runner-up to Harry and Aliona in the Final.

2. John & Johannes

  • Movie Week
  • Series 19 (2021) Week 3
  • Paso Doble
  • He’s a Pirate from ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl’
  • 9 Oct 2021
  • Score: 39 (9,10,10,10)

Topping the leaderboard with this in Week 3 was already super impressive, but John and Johannes went on to improve their score when they danced it again in the Final, achieving the perfect 40. Getting full marks in the Paso is rare; the only other couple to achieve it are Chelsee & Pasha in 2011.

3. Kara & Artem

  • Movie Night
  • Series 8 (2010) Week 10 QF
  • Tango
  • El Tango de Roxanne from ‘Moulin Rouge’
  • 4 Dec 2010
  • Score: 38 (9,9,10,10)

If you only watch one clip – better make it this one. Kara and Artem chat in the VT about the ‘romance rumours’ and both are super cute. Oh and their Paso is impressive too – particularly when she walks over the chair.

3. Holly & Artem

  • Movie Night
  • Series 9 (2011) Week 10 QF
  • Paso Doble
  • The Plaza of Execution from ‘The Mask of Zorro’
  • 3 Dec 2011
  • Score: 38 (9,9,10,10)

Here’s Artem again with another Movie Night winner, this time with Holly Valance. Bruno raved about her flamenco in this one, and Craig was full of praise for Holly’s “skirt work”. Second only on the night to Chelsee & Pasha’s Jive (see 2).

3. Kelvin & Oti

  • Movie Week
  • Series 17 (2019) Week 3
  • Charleston
  • Trip a Little Light Fantastic from ‘Mary Poppins Returns’
  • 5 Oct 2019
  • Score: 38 (9,9,10,10)

The second highest scoring Week 3 movie-themed dance ever (see 2 above for number 1). This was a timely choice from the 2018 movie and a real joy. It was a pity Jamie Laing withdrew with an injury of course, but Kelvin thankfully stepped in and the rest is Strictly history!

4. Jason & Kristina

  • Movie Night
  • Series 9 (2011) Week 10 QF
  • American Smooth
  • Singin’ in the Rain from ‘Singin’ in the Rain’
  • 3 Dec 2011
  • Score: 37 (9,9,9,10)

Great opening sequence to this dance where JD does his best Gene Kelly into a neat umbrella seat lift for Kristina. My favourite Singin’ in the Rain dance, of which there are 3 and Ore & Joanne’s version in the Final of 2016 scored highest (39).

4. Jay & Aliona

  • Movie Week
  • Series 13 (2015) Week 3
  • Jive
  • Misirlou/You Never Can Tell from ‘Pulp Fiction’
  • 10 Oct 2015
  • Score: 37 (9,9,9,10)

Surely the most iconic Strictly dance ever – and the highest scoring Week 3 dance until Kelvin and Oti scored 38 (see 3). The intensity and uniqueness of this dance was off-the charts, so much so that both Jay and Aliona did not want to dance it again. IMO Best Dance Ever!

4. Rhys & Nancy

  • Movie Week
  • Series 19 (2021)
  • Couple’s Choice
  • Spiderman from ‘Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse’
  • 9 Oct 2021
  • Score: 37 (9,10,9,9)

Motsi loved this so much she gave it a 10 and the street/commercial style really suited Rhys here. A fun, funky performance – with clever effects to give the impression they were climbing up skyscrapers just like the real Spidey.

5. Harry & Aliona

  • Movie Night
  • Series 9 (2011) Week 10 QF
  • Rumba
  • (Everything I Do) I Do It For You from ‘Robin Hood Prince of Thieves’
  • 3 Dec 2011
  • Score: 36 (9,9,9,9)

Highest scoring movie-themed Rumba where Harry (according to Bruno) turned “something that could have been tragic into a little bit of magic”. No gimmicks or fancy sets here, just a beautifully-danced performance which spoke for itself.

5. Danny & Oti

  • Movie Week
  • Series 14 (2016) Week 3
  • Paso Doble
  • The Train/El Sombrero Blanco from ‘The Mask of Zorro’
  • 8 Oct 2016
  • Score: 36 (9,9,9,9)

Entering on a chandelier is always impressive and Danny and Oti’s performance here was an early indication they’d be contenders. All great Strictly Movie Weeks need an intense, dramatic Paso Doble and this one didn’t disappoint.

5. Claudia & AJ

  • Movie Week
  • Series 14 (2016) Week 3
  • Charleston
  • You Give a Little Love from ‘Bugsy Malone’
  • 8 Oct 2016
  • Score: 36 (9,9,9,9)

Claudia’s gymnastic skills helped her here (she did a better cartwheel than AJ) and I loved the custard pie in the face ending. Together with Danny and Oti (see 5) these two topped the judges’ leaderboard.

5. Faye & Giovanni

  • Movie Week
  • Series 16 (2018) Week 3
  • Quickstep
  • You’re the One that I Want from ‘Grease’
  • 6 Oct 2018
  • Score: 36 (9,9,9,9)

Wow the only Quickstep to make it into the top 16! Faye and Giovanni looked a-maz-ing as Sandy and Danny, they tore up the dancefloor and included some great moves from the film itself. Still the highest scoring Grease dance seen on Strictly.

5. Dev & Diane

  • Movie Week
  • Series 17 (2019) Week 3
  • Couple’s Choice (Street / Commercial)
  • Friend Like Me from ‘Aladdin’
  • 5 Oct 2019
  • Score: 36 (9,9,9,9)

This was the stand-out performance from Dev – who was, a bit surprisingly, eliminated the following week. The styling was superb with a fab flying carpet floor sequence and Diane was cute as cheeky monkey Abu. A big song like this needed a big performance and they definitely delivered.

5. Rose & Giovanni

  • Movie Week
  • Series 19 (2021) Week 3
  • Foxtrot
  • Rose’s Theme from ‘Titanic’
  • 9 Oct 2021
  • Score: 36 (9,9,9,9)

Rose really arrived with this elegant , classic understated Foxtrot. As they finish dancing, Giovanni says to her “Beautiful”. Enough said.

 5. Frankie & Kevin

  • Movie Week
  • Series 12 (2014) Week 3
  • Paso Doble
  • America from ‘West Side Story’
  • 11 Oct 2014
  • Score: 45/50 (8,9,9,9,9,10)

This Paso sneaks in because with guest judge Donny Osmond it was scored out of 50, and so is equivalent to the dances that scored 36/40. Plus I love it and a leaderboard without Kevin Clifton on it just seemed wrong.
