Strictly Rewound: Series 21 Week 2 Tunes
28 September 2023Here at StrictlyDB, we’ve taken a whistle-stop tour to see if, and when, the tunes selected for the couples’ Week 2 dances have previously made an appearance on the show, and how earlier contestants fared.
Will it reveal anything about Saturday night’s potential scores? Here’s what we found out:
Adam & Luba: Tango to ‘Somebody Told Me’ by Måneskin
- Song: 2nd outing on Strictly.
- Used when: Kate & Anton danced a Week 7 Paso Doble in 2007 to the the Killers version.
- Portents: Not great. Kate & Anton scored 21, were at the bottom of the leaderboard in the dance off against John Barnes & Nicole Cutler, and saw 3 judges vote them off the show.
- Verdict: A powerful track demanding a determined performance; fingers crossed Adam & Luba will have more luck!
Annabel & Johannes: Quickstep to ‘Walking On Sunshine’ by Katrina & The Waves
- Song: 5th outing on Strictly.
- Used when: Matt & Lilia danced a Quickstep in 2006 (scoring 34) and twice when Abbey & Aljaž quickstepped in Week 8 and the 2013 Final (38). More recently a version attributed to the Take Me to Rio Collective was used for Saffron and AJ’s Series 17 Week 10 Samba (earning 26 points).
- Portents: Potentially promising. Some high scores so far for Quicksteps to this track and it was a Winners’ dance for Abbey & Aljaž.
- Verdict: A crowdpleasing dance to an anthemic track, so a score in the 30s for Annabel & Johannes should be achievable!
Angela R & Kai: Foxtrot to ‘You Make Me Feel So Young’ by Frank Sinatra
- Song: 4th outing on Strictly.
- Used when: Matt & Lilia danced a 34-scoring American Smooth in 2006 and when Ann & Anton earned their 2nd highest score for a Foxtrot in 2010 (20), which still placed them bottom of the Leaderboard. Harry Connick Jr’s version was used for Judge Rinder & Oksana’s Foxtrot in 2016 which was one of 3 of their dances scoring 33 points.
- Portents: Mixed. Some previous high scores to this song, but interestingly of 54 dances with Sinatra tracks only 2 secured a perfect score: Ali & Brian’s 2009 Semi-Final American Smooth to Come Dance With Me (50) and Lisa & Brendan’s 2008 Quickstep to Dancing in the Dark (40)
- Verdict: Likely to be a class act with Angela & Kai ballroom dancing to Ol’ Blue Eyes.
Bobby & Dianne: Charleston to ‘Do Your Thing’ by Basement Jaxx
- Song: 5th outing on Strictly.
- Used when: Bill & Karen did their Quickstep in 2005 (23), Jimi & Flavia performed a Charleston in 2010 (27) as well as Peter & Janette’s 2015 Charleston (38). Our favourite use of this all-pleasing tune however was the 2018 Lindy Hop-a-Thon, deservedly won by Ashley & Pasha.
- Portents: Very favourable – a popular dance style to a banging, floor-filler tune with some high scores in the past.
- Verdict: Hopefully a super slick, charming Charleston which will suit Bobby & Dianne’s undoubted energy, but it is only Week 2 so we’ll have to see.
Krishnan & Lauren: Foxtrot to ‘Love Really Hurts Without You’ by Billy Ocean
- Song: 2nd outing on Strictly.
- Used when: Rev Richard Coles & Dianne scored 17 points for their American Smooth in Week 2 in 2017.
- Portents: Middling – the average score for a Week 2 Foxtrot is 25.6.
- Verdict: Here at StrictlyDB we think the Ballroom will suit Krishnan and he’ll improve on his Week 1 Cha Cha Cha score of 22.
Layton & Nikita: Quickstep to ‘Puttin’ On The Ritz’ by Gregory Porter
- Song: 3rd outing on Strictly.
- Used when: Danny & Oti performed a perfect leaderboard-topping, 40-scoring Charleston at Blackpool in Week 9 of 2016 (the first of the Series); Ann & Anton also danced a Quickstep to the original Astaire version in 2010 and earned their 3rd highest score of 18.
- Portents: Fair to good – even Ann & Anton managed 18 points with this particular combination.
- Verdict: Potential for a stylish, knockout performance to an absolute classic if Layton can channel his energy.
Les & Nancy: Samba to ‘Rock The Boat’ by Hues Corporation
- Song: 3rd outing on Strictly.
- Used when: Lisa & Brendan danced a Samba in Week 9 of 2008 (scoring 30); Lauren & AJ performed their Samba in the Semi-Final of 2018 (scoring 23).
- Portents: Pretty dire tbh. Both previous Sambas struggled; Lisa & Brendan ended up in the dance-off with theirs despite scoring 30 (though they were saved by Craig, Arlene & Len) and Lauren & AJ’s 23 was the lowest-scoring dance of Semi-Final night in 2018.
- Verdict: One to watch for sure, but with Les’ Week 1 performance and the Samba’s notoriety as a tricky dance, perhaps not for the right reasons (though I hope to be proved wrong).
Nikita & Gorka: Charleston to ‘Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)’ by Beyoncé
- Song: 3rd outing on Strictly.
- Used when: Dani & Vincent danced a Samba in Week 8 of 2012 (scoring 36); Catherine & Johannes scored 30 for their Week 4 Charleston in 2019 (which was incredibly fast-paced).
- Portents: Hard to gauge – the average Week 2 Charleston score is 24.9 and it does feel like Week 2 is early on for this dance style, however this song choice could lift the performance for sure as its previous high scores suggest.
- Verdict: Everyone loves a Beyoncé tune and we think this might just suit Nikita right down to her sequins. Can’t wait to see.
Let us know in the Comments below which dance you are most looking forward to this Saturday.
Saffron and AJ also used “Walking on Sunshine” for their Samba in 2019
Thanks for spotting this Oliver. You are indeed right – I missed Saffron and AJ’s Samba from Week 10 2019 because it was credited to a different artist, Take Me to Rio Collective. Obviously better to filter on Song title than Artist in the dance database to avoid omissions. Will make sure to do this next time, Now updated.
I am shocked that this year is the first time that ‘Perfect’ by Fairground Attraction will have been used on the show!
Me too. Also surprised that Zara & Graziano’s Quickstep to George Ezra’s Anyone For You will only be the 2nd dance to one of his songs on the show; Karim & Amy performed a successful Week 4 Tango to ‘Paradise’ back in 2019. The man himself has performed live on Strictly at least twice.
