2016 - Series 14 facts and stats
- It’s official – S14 just pips every other year in terms of the highest average total score (31.45), and is also joint first for the highest average judge score (7.86, joint with S20) – so in terms of average scores it’s currently the best Series ever (though it’s not top for 10s or perfect scores)
- S14 owes this high average dance score to the fact that all 3 finalists (Ore, Louise and Danny) are in the Top 20 rankings for celebrities with the highest average total score; in no other Series, do all the Finalists make this Top 20 list
- 39 awarded to Ore & Joanne for their Week 4 Jive is the highest score awarded to a Week 4 dance in 13 years, but in following years it is matched as a W4 score by Alexandra & Gorka (S15), Hamza & Jowita (S20) and Tasha & Aljaž (S22). In the Final, Ore & Joanne go on to score 40 for this dance – the first perfect Jive since Jill & Darren all the way back in S2 (2004)
- Runner-up Danny Mac has the 5th highest average individual judge score of all celebrities (9.16); the only male celebrity with a higher individual average score is Layton Williams (9.19)
- Newcomer pro, AJ makes it to the Semi-Final but loses out with Claudia in the dance-off to Danny & Oti; this will be his fate for the next two Series (15 & 16) where he will go home after a Semi-Final dance-off in which all the judges vote unanimously to save the other couple
- Danny & Oti achieve the first 40 for a Samba in W10 dancing to ‘Magalenha’, and repeat the feat to achieve a double-40 dance when they redance it in the Series Final; this was the 3rd double-40 routine in Strictly history after Rachel & Vincent in S6 and Pamela & James in S8. Danny was the first male celebrity to achieve this, and the only other male celebrity with a double-40 dance is Karim Zeroual’s S17 Jive with Amy
- Politician Ed Balls follows in the footsteps of predecessors, Ann Widdecombe (S8) and Edwina Currie (S9) who swapped the halls of Westminster for the dance floor; he was the first male politician to take part in the main show, and none of us will ever forget his Week 8 Salsa to Gangnam Style
- Sadly, this would be Len’s last Series as Head Judge; he left the show having judged 1570 competitive couple dances over 13 years and is still very much missed 😢
