2019 - Series 17 facts and stats

  • Series 17 (2019) is the first time a Waltz was not danced in Week 1. Later, S19 and S20 would omit this style in Week 1 too
  • Kelvin – who is a last minute substitute for an injured Jamie Laing – dances with Oti, and they make a memorable start to their campaign with a 32-scoring Samba; this is the highest score for a Week 1 Samba ever, matched only by Maisie & Gorka in S18 (who scored 24/30 for theirs)
  • Neil, Johannes and Luba get their first celebrity partners (Alex Scott, Catherine Tyldesley and James Cracknell respectively); Luba’s run with James is short-lived when they are eliminated first in the W2 dance-off against David James & Nadiya. In fact, James has the joint 2nd lowest average judge score (3) and average total score (12) of all celebrities. Susannah Constantine is joint 2nd worst with James, only Quentin Willson in Series 2 scored less
  • Kelvin & Oti receive 2 tens from Shirley & Bruno for their W3 Mary Poppins routine and score 38 – which is the highest score for a Week 3 dance yet to be awarded. This will be bettered 2 years later when John & Johannes score 39 for their Pirates of the Caribbean Movie Week dance
  • In Week 5 of S17, Alfonso stood in again as a guest judge for Bruno; he awarded 1 ten, which was to Saffron & AJ for their Foxtrot. In the 24 dances Alfonso judged as a guest in S16 and S17, this was the only ten he awarded. Interestingly despite getting his two highest scores with Saffron in S17, AJ was eliminated earlier in this Series (Week 10) than when he reached the Semi-Final with his 3 previous partners
  • With Amy, Karim Zeroual tops the Final leaderboard above winner Kelvin Fletcher by a single point (119 vs 118), performs only the second ‘double-40’ dance by a male celebrity (Jive) and takes the top spot for male celebrities in terms of most tens, toppling S7’s Ricky Whittle as he earns 29 tens (1 more than Ricky’s record)
  • Darcey is replaced by Motsi on the judging panel; she awards her first ten in W4 to Karim & Amy’s Tango and will award 24 more during S17 – matching Bruno’s 25 tens this Series overall
