2022 - Series 20

Strictly Come Dancing returned for its twentieth series with a launch show on 23 September 2022 on BBC One, with live shows beginning the following day on 24 September. The launch show was originally scheduled to be broadcast on 17 September, but was postponed following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman returned as hosts, while Rylan Clark and Janette Manrara returned to host Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two.

2022 - Series 20 facts and stats

S20 is the joint highest scoring Series in terms of highest average judge score (7.86) and second highest in terms of average total score (31.44); it also saw the second highest number of 10s awarded ever (98), beaten only by S22 (104 tens)
7 celebrities received at least one 10 for the first time in this Series (Kym, Tyler, Will, Molly, Helen, Hamza and Fleur); this has since been matched in S22 where Pete, Jamie, Montell, Chris, Sarah, JB and Tasha all received at least one perfect paddle
The traditional Series format (S13 onwards) is wholly restored with Movie Week in W3, Halloween Week in W6, Blackpool in W9 and Musicals Week for the Quarter-Final (W11). An additional special (BBC 100) in honour of the BBC’s 100th birthday takes place in W5 where couples performed to iconic BBC theme tunes
33 of the 98 tens are awarded by Anton which is more than the other judges (Motsi – 32, Shirley – 28 and Craig – 5), however it is not a record for Anton who goes on to give out 34 tens in S22, the highest number by one judge in a Series (and matched by Bruno during S16)
Hamza & Jowita win, making Jowita the fifth pro to win on her first attempt (she had joined in 2021 but did not have a partner that year); others who achieved this are Brendan, Darren, Aljaž and Artem
Aljaž and Oti don’t return for S20, but the pros are joined by Vito, Carlos, Lauren and Michelle; neither female pro receives a partner, but Carlos and Vito do and both reach the Final in their first ever Series
Fleur & Vito achieve significant milestones; their Couple’s Choice routine to a ‘Destiny’s Child’ compilation becomes the fifth ‘double-40’ dance and in the Final she becomes the first female celebrity to dance a perfect Samba
3 of the 4 Finalists perform their Couple’s Choice routine, and all score 40. This is the only time three couples have performed the same style and each received a perfect score in a single show. With the exception of the Showdance, it is also only the 2nd time ever that 3 couples perform the same routine in a Final. The first was back in 2008 when all 3 couples danced a Foxtrot
Hamza & Jowita’s 34-scoring Showdance is the lowest score awarded to a winning couple for this style, contributing to a lower Series average this year for Showdances (36.75) than Couple’s Choice dances (37.70)
